Dec. 1, 2010 (Chicago) — Breast shields should be utilized to spare the breast tissue from radiation in men and women undergoing CT scans of the lung.
So say researchers who found that the shield — a thin piece of heavy metal set before the chest – does not affect the diagnostic accuracy of the pictures.
Inquire about has shown that breast shields diminish the dosage of radiation to the chest by around 30%, says Terry Healey, MD, director of thoracic radiation at Alpert Therapeutic School of Brown University in Provision, R.I.
That’s important since “radiation can cause auxiliary cancers, especially in the breast tissue,” he tells WebMD.
But numerous specialists are hesitant to use the shields since they can cause artifacts — streaks or lines, for example — on the pictures. “They worry that the images will be harder to studied and this will compromise their diagnostic precision,” Healey says.
That, be that as it may, has never been proven.
Breast Shields Don’t Influence Determination
So Healey and colleagues examined 50 people who had chest CT checks before and after the routine utilize of breast shields at their institution. Most were having the checks to look for cancer or to examine lung nodules.
The shield was set straightforwardly on the chest or raised about 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches absent from the chest.
In two-thirds of patients, the pictures had streaks or other artifacts. But none impacted the conclusion, Healey says.
“We never missed a finding,” he says.
Lifting the shield approximately an inch to an inch-and-a-half off the chest will decrease the chance of having an artifact, Healey says.
The think about was presented here at the annual assembly of the Radiological Society of North America.
Inquired to comment on the discoveries, Judy Yee, MD, bad habit chair of radiology at the College of California, San Francisco, tells WebMD that “there’s no great reason not to use breast shields. The fetched is moderately moo and the benefit expansive.”
They’re particularly useful for younger patients (who are more helpless to the effects of radiation) and ladies (as they’re more likely to develop breast cancer), she says.
The taken a toll of a breast shield is about $100, Healey says. “Whereas they’re showcased for one-time utilize, we reuse them,” he says.
